Do Cats Enjoy Listening to Music?

Do you have a cat that moves towards your system or rub itself against it while playing certain songs? If yes then probably, it likes the music you play. According to some study published in Applied Animal Behavior Journal, cats including young and old, reacted to certain songs especially, the two songs that were created for cats. But why?
Do cats even understand the lyrics in the songs they hear? Is it possible that like humans, some tunes make them happy? Well, while studies are still being conducted to figure out the answer to this fascinating phenomenon, some researchers have mentioned that cats appreciate music the same way we do.
For that reason, several researchers decided to work together with some musicians and pet fanatics to create songs that other animals including cats can enjoy. They created several songs that were intended specifically for cats. While creating these songs, they focused on the cats hearing capability and possible sounds they may hear while out in the jungle.
They visited several houses and played a few classic songs as well as songs that were mainly intended for felines. When the classic songs were played, no cat came near the speaker. On the other hand, when they played the songs created for feline, a good number of cats came near the speaker, and some started rubbing themselves on the sides of the speaker. While this might be a clear sign that cats like music, not all the cats reacted the same way to the songs they played.
This article will try and examine several situations that might help give us the answer to why cats like music.

Cats react to sound the same way humans do

It has been noted that cats respond to some sounds similarly to humans. For example, both cats and humans will get scared and probably run when they hear a sudden, loud and unusual sound such as a gunshot and more. Also, studies have shown that continuous sounds accompanied by gentle wind can make both humans and animals feel soothed. For example, if you play some music that your cat like, it will want to come closer to the source. More often, they will sit near the system and just relax or start rubbing themselves on the sides of your system.

Cats have an excellent hearing ability

Cats are known to have a superior hearing capability compared to many other creatures on the planet. They will recognize the softest sound and the most gentle air movement with much ease. They are also able to detect small vibrations. For that reason, they can identify various rhythms, harmonies, and sounds. Because of their highly-sensible receptors, they can make great music fanatics. But researchers have mentioned that they can be a little bit selective when it comes to music.

Cats remember the songs they like

There are songs that you can’t forget. You will always think of them, and when you get the chance, you will find yourself singing along while they are playing. Several studies have confirmed that cats have great memories and that is the reason they will become attached to certain items in the house. Just like toys, cats can get attached to several songs and they will be able to recognize the difference between how it starts and how other different songs start.

Cats may become interested in the music we play more often

It has been noted that cats have the ability to read human minds. It is likely that they will realize when we are enjoying some songs and when we are not. Since cats are selective when it comes to music, they can also differentiate between the music they want to hear more often and those they don’t want to hear. The point is, just like humans, they have their taste.

Conclusion

Cats just like humans can react differently to different sounds and music is not an exception. Visit dog obedience training to self-teach how to train cats and dogs. However, it has been noted that the reactions vary from one cat to the next. Since no efficient research has been conducted, we can’t conclude whether it is natural for cats to like music or not. But we can hope that any other research that will be conducted will give us better answers than what we have in this article.
